After More Than 5 Years being Exclusive, Octopath Traveler Will Come to PlayStation and Xbox

Octopath Traveler has recently been rated in Taiwan for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, marking a significant expansion for the game that was originally launched on Nintendo Switch, PC (Steam), and Xbox One.

This development comes as no surprise to fans eagerly awaiting the opportunity to experience this classic RPG on Sony’s platforms. With the sequel already available on PlayStation consoles, this move aligns with Square Enix’s broader strategy to bring their titles to a wider audience.

It means, Square Enix will not holding back to sell current exclusive titles to another platform.

Background and Initial Release

Octopath Traveler debuted on Nintendo Switch in July 2018, quickly gaining a devoted following thanks to its unique HD-2D art style and engaging, character-driven narrative. The game was later released on PC via Steam and Xbox One, expanding its reach but notably skipping the PlayStation platforms at the time. This decision left many PlayStation enthusiasts hoping for a future release.

Recent Developments and Ratings

The recent rating in Taiwan, as reported by Gematsu, suggests that Octopath Traveler will soon be available for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. This development coincides with an announcement regarding the Xbox Series X/S version of the sequel, which was highlighted by Microsoft at the Tokyo Game Show 2023. However, a firm release date for these versions is yet to be disclosed.

The game is clearly just released at PS Store on June 6, a day after this article posted.

Buying a bundle seems like cheaper than just a title.

Square Enix’s Multiplatform Strategy

Square Enix has been vocal about its intent to “aggressively pursue” a multiplatform strategy, aiming to diversify its earnings and broaden its player base. This strategy includes making major franchises and AAA titles available on multiple platforms. The addition of Octopath Traveler 2 to Game Pass, as reported by Exputer, underscores this commitment to accessibility and inclusivity for gamers worldwide.

Announcements at Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest

Further cementing their multiplatform strategy, Square Enix made significant announcements at the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest in Las Vegas last year. Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, took to the stage to reveal that Final Fantasy 14 would be coming to Xbox. Takashi Kiryu, CEO of Square Enix, also hinted at other titles making their way to Microsoft’s consoles. These announcements highlight Square Enix’s ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between different gaming communities and platforms.

Future Prospects for Square Enix Titles

With Octopath Traveler making its way to PlayStation platforms, speculation about other titles follows naturally. While games like Final Fantasy 16 and the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy remain uncertain in terms of multiplatform releases, Square Enix’s recent actions suggest a willingness to expand their titles’ availability.
