Desire Over Fun’s review process
Desireoverfun.com reviews tell you whether or not we liked something and why, evaluating games and devices based on both what they try to do, and whether they do it successfully.
The assessment methodology at Desireoverfun.com encapsulates the essence of our preferences and critiques, elucidating our sentiments towards various entities. Be it games or gadgets, our discernment centers around their intended purpose and the efficacy with which they accomplish it.
Our evaluative narratives aspire to furnish you with an ample reservoir of insights, scrutiny, and situational backdrop, aiding your verdict on the compatibility of a particular game with your preferences. Simultaneously, these narratives endeavor.
The selection of games for scrutiny is grounded in our anticipation of what captivates your interest, encompassing aspects such as the game’s caliber, thematic richness, and overall prominence. While we handpick reviewers based on their acumen within a series, game, genre, or platform, we diligently strive to maintain equilibrium between specialized expertise and a broader comprehension of games, game design, and cultural influences.
Prior to publication, thorough deliberations occur with an editor or editorial team. However, it is imperative to note that the final appraisal remains the exclusive professional judgment of the assigned reviewer. Star ratings, outlined below, are fashioned by the reviewer, guided by the narrative they craft; suggestions for alterations may be proposed by editors, yet such modifications only transpire with the concurrence of the reviewer.
What we review, and when
We only review games that are officially released or versions that are exactly like the ones you can buy in stores. We don’t review games before they come out or test early versions. If a game has a beta version, we’ll only review it if it’s practically the same as the one everyone else can buy.
Since we only review released games, we won’t often review them from events organized by the game publishers. We might still go to these events for other news coverage.
We want our experience with a game to be similar to what most players go through. So, we’ll make sure to use any updates that come out on the first day, for example.
Connection problems have become less common, but to make sure our experience is like yours, we’ll usually review games that need an internet connection after they’re released and more people are playing.
If a game doesn’t need the internet, but we think most players care about online features, we’ll still review it after it’s out and more people are playing.
We decide when to review a game, but we’ll try to do it as soon as possible while being careful and representing the majority of players. If we delay a review until after the release, we might share our first thoughts before or close to the launch if we haven’t played it before.
We might review “Early Access” versions of games that are for sale if a lot of people are interested and the game is very similar to the complete version. When games come out in parts, we’ll only do a full review when all the parts are out, but we might share our thoughts on each part, especially the first one.
We aim to write reviews that are reliable and don’t need constant updates. The version of the game available for everyone to buy should be the one developers and publishers are okay with being judged. If something important changes about a game, we might update our review or change the rating, but that’s rare. If a game changes a lot, we might do a full re-review, but that’s also very uncommon.
How we review video games
Our reviews are personal opinions from individual critics, not a collective viewpoint from Desire Over Fun’s member. We don’t try to judge games objectively. But, we are aim to be more honest as possible that may lead to sarcastic-tone.
Games are unique because they’re a mix of consumer products and artistic expressions. Unlike printers, games are also a form of culture and entertainment. We review them based on what they’re trying to achieve and how well they do it, not like traditional product reviews.
We don’t believe in strict star rating rules. Stars don’t rank games against each other. Instead, they give you a quick idea of our overall opinion. Each review looks at a game on its own terms. If you’re unsure about the stars, read the review itself for the reasoning. We also provide a short summary sentence with every review.
